The year 2008 is almost gone (at least in my timezone) and I would like to thank all the great people, who visited this website. Especially those ones giving me so much positive feedback for SonicFileFinder and even more the ones sending presents from my wishlists.
It’s been great to see, that SonicFileFinder picked up some speed in this year. It almost cracked the 10000-Downloads-in-one-year barrier!
I am so much looking forward to 2009, since there are great opportunities at work (Comma-Soft AG) in building new (web) frontends. A new private project is going to start. There is a good chance, that I will attend the Mix 2009 and so much more.
Furthermore, I am hoping for more time to blog about interesting stuff, since besides the SonicFileFinder releases it has been quite silent in 2008.
Anyways, I wish you folks all the best for 2009! Stay save, be delighted, do some sports, enjoy, have a great time with friends and family, live, watch good movies, eat good food … well, you know the rest.
Kind regards
Jens
P.S: Let’s also not forget the SPAMers providing me with so many hilarious E-Mail as well as so much annoying stuff. Thank you!
I was very delighted this morning seeing that SonicFileFinder got "morning brewed" by Chris Alcock! This is so awesome, thank you Chris!
After the Daily Grind was gone, Chris jumped in and continued the tradition. I really enjoy reading his blog and I already infected some of my colleagues. If you don't know the "Morning Brew" yet, I strongly advise to get there. Chris blogs about interesting finds regarding .NET with a lot of "must reads" in it.
I just went live with my new website based on the Drupal CMS system. It's not perfect and some stuff is missing, but the basic stuff should work.
Links to content of the old typo3 based site should be completely redirected to the new site. Although I expect there will be a few links I forgot, so the next days could be a bumpy ride. I'll check the log for dead links, but please tell me, if something doesn't work as expected.
I really like Feedburner. I like it's features for automatically transforming a feed into different feed types and much more.
But after setting the default feed of my website to the Feedburner feed it slowly drew google, etc. away. As a result you'll find my Feedburner feed on google, but not my website until you really keep looking for it.
Why am I writing this? I'd like to ask you to point your feed subscription back to the main feed of my website, if possible.
The main feed exists at http://www.jens-schaller.de/blog/rss.xml. (The default feed for this website is now also pointed to this location.) Anyway, the Feedburner feed will of course not be shutdown!
Well, well, as time goes by. While trying out Windows Vista, I just missed my 1st blogging anniversary. My first post was on October 3rd 2005, but I guess it's not to late as I'm still in a one week radius ;)
While writing a "larger" blog post like Code Snippets - the whole enchilada is really hard work, I must say that it's really worth it realizing that people actually read the stuff you wrote.
Also the very positive feedback I got on my first published tool called SonicFileFinder really keeps me going.
Thank you all for reading / using my stuff and I hope you stay tuned for things to come.
It's done: My website finally runs under typo3 4.0. It was really hard work, but it's really worth it. The workspace feature is way cool!
I came across some problems with my mutlilanguage pages. I used the "one-tree-fits-all-languages" concept and templavoila. The only way to define a page in multiple languages with the old templavoila version is to create a translation using the old page module und reference the result in the translated page. (At least this is the way with the least pain, I think.)
With typo3 4.0 those copied references will be marked with a warning saying that there are 2 references to the same content object on the current page. (I guess many people saw this warning.)
The thawte Web of Trust (WOT) is a Certification system that allows your identity to be validated for use in your Personal Certificate.
I am telling you this, because as of now I am a WOT notary myself and can therefore give away trust points to others.
If you would like to get you own e-mail signing certificate with your name included, just contact me so I can give you some trust points. (50 points are needed to get your personal certificate.)
I hear you thinking: "Free e-mail certificate you say? Where's the catch?" Well there is a little catch as always: You have to stand before me in person and show me your passport, so I can identify yourself.
So, if you are willing to come to Bonn/Germany, you are welcome to visit me ;)
Some people asked me, why I am blogging in english language. Well, here comes the answer:
I plan to blog mainly about development topics. All devs should in my opinion
use english operating systems
use english development tools
read english development books
code in english
comment their code in english
etc.
So, the technical articles will always be in english.
But then, when I write articles about other things, I try to blog in english and german. Since it takes not just a small amount of time to translate every article, there maybe only the english version every now and then. But don't hesitate to ask me for the german version! I will deliver it in addition.
When you subscribe to my feed you can always choose between two languages:
If you subscribe to the german feed and there is no german translation for a specific article you will automatically receive the english version.
You can also choose the language of the whole website by selecting the appropriate language flag in the upper right corner. If a flag is grayed out, there is no such language version of the current page.
There maybe are people out there who don't know me, so let me tell you a bit about this Jens Schaller ;)
I am a 34 year old software developer. It all started with studying electronics in the field automation. The automation part was mainly based on developing software for controlling production lines using neuronal networks, etc.
I very much enjoyed this part, so after I finished my diploma I decided to make software development my profession.
In my spare time I enjoy doing sports, spending time with friends and of course doing computer stuff like games and developing software.
I am also a huge movie enthusiast and science fiction fan, as you might have guessed from the title of this entry.
Why blogging?
So, why did I start a blog? Well THAT'S a good question ;) Everyone seems to get one, so I had to get one too. Naaah...this isn't the reason believe me.
I plan to post development stuff like own macros, programs, articles as well as some things, that I find interesting enough to tell.
Well, that's it for now. I hope you'll enjoy reading this blog, as much as I enjoy writing it. If you have questions, comments, etc. feel free to !
The news feeds are now working as they should. Before there was a problem with the external links in the XML-export when calling the detail view of a blog post.
Also there are now different feeds for each category, so you can subscribe only to the "devstuff" category for example, if you are only interested in the developer centric blog posts.
Finally! It took very long to take this site online. Some of my friends and colleagues were periodically making jokes about it ;)
After doing my wifes website (Karin) and helping out a friend of mine Sascha Prüter with his webdesign (hmm, the design looks familiar ;), I tried to build my own.
I decided to use typo3 as the base for my site, and I went through many up's and down's with this great but complex system.
Many thanks to Ingo Renner for supporting me in integrating his new and very nice blogging-extension timtab! Ingo, I allowed myself to decrease the number of items on your amazon-wishlist...
Furthermore I thank Sascha for allowing me to host mine and my wife's website on a server of him and some of his friends!
Please note that this website is still in it's childhood. There are still a few issues with the blogging area, that need to be fixed. My RSS-feed is available, but at the moment it is not possible to subscribe to feeds concerning specific posting categories e.g. for people who just want to read all the technical or all the personal posts. Also the links for jumping to the page for viewing a single blog entry won't work when using the feed.
Additionally there isn't really much content, but be sure there is more to come...
